Summary
Javaman.
Another Labor Day upon us and another search for something newish, backcountry and canine-friendly …and suitable for a 3-day weekend from Portland. We thought about going back to the Wind Rivers again but the drive seemed a bit much for 3 days (getting old). A quick search through mountainproject’s multi-pitch options in Montana revealed a new to us Beehive Basin area outside of Big Sky (~2h drive time savings). And so went. A leisurely drive after work on Friday night and an equally leisurely continuation the next day put us at the trailhead in the late afternoon on Saturday. Quick approach to Beehive Basin and an unhurried climb on Sunday (alpine start of 10am). We climbed the
Original Route, a.k.a.
Javaman, (5 pitch, 5.10) and found it to be pretty nice: sustained at 5.9 with a 20 foot section of harder climbing. Good quality rock as well. Experience is marred only by the presence of the sprawling ski area visible on the horizon. One more night in camp and back home the following evening. While there’s the light and fast approach, this trip would fall under slow and gourmet – yeah, we ate and drank quite well during our two nights in the backcountry on this one.
