Shirley leading Mush Maker (5.7).Kloochman Rock from Goose Egg.Our first trip to Tieton was in the spring of 2003 at the tail end of the Mazamas Advanced Rock course. This was pretty much our first exposure to crack climbing and we liked it (even though it would take three years for us to go back). Much like Smith, the place enjoys a rain shadow effect courtesy of Mount Rainier next door and so it can be pretty good in early spring. The only limitation is the seasonal raptor closure of some of the main areas. Besides the basalt crack areas, we’ve also tasted a bit of multi-pitch on Goose Egg Mountain. Nice but we’re done sticking our necks out on that chunk (those chunks?) of rock.
