Honeycomb Chimney

Shirley on pitch 8 of Honeycomb Chimney (Dec. 2011).

Christmas Eve drove down to Veegas through the no man’s land of SE Oregon & Nevada . First time going through Burns. Key lesson here is bring your own coffee as none is available between Bend , OR & Vegas. Christmas Day hiked into Pine Creek Canyon all revved up for something big and exciting but that quickly got quenched as we hit the shady and cold interiors of the canyon. Thus ended up on Honeycomb Chimney (7 pitch 5.9ish). All we really remember is the pain in the ass hike off for something that was pretty much ho-ho-hum climbing-wise (one good & one very good pitch do not make a quality 7-pitch climb…do the Community Pillar next door for some real climbing & only 5.8). Actually, the other recollection is that Shirley’s line got pinched as she was leading pitch 2 and someone had to follow it on a prussic. Hiked out, had another Thai dinner & hit the road running. Home on day 3 early in the evening.

Leading the nicest pitch of the outing - number 7 (Dec. 2011).

Shirley leading the 8th pitch of Honeycomb Chimney. The goal is that obvious cave up above where we did another short (chossy) pitch through some rubble (Dec. 2011).
