Pre-Christmas In Smith

Summary

The Arrowpoint

Shirley scrambling up the 3rd class ridge below the southern face of The Arrowpoint (December 21, 2003).

In late December of 2003 (21st), we spent a day climbing in Smith Rock. Think we did something in the main area (Purple Headed Warrior, 5.7?), Lion’s Jaw (5.8) and the first pitch of Ho Chi Minh Trail on The Red Wall. Then hiked up the backside of the Smith Rock Group to do some choss peak bagging. We did the Northwest Corner of The Arrowpoint (short, low-5th choss “route”) and The Platform (short, low-5th choss route). Nice views though!

The Dihedrals

The Dihedrals as seen from the top of Purple Headed Warrior route (I think; Dec. 2003).

Smith Rock Group

Smith Summits

West Summit of the Smith Rock Group from (southwest) the approach trail on the summit plateau (December 21, 2003).

The Arrowpoint

Shirley scrambling up the 3rd class ridge below the southern face of The Arrowpoint. The summit route up The Arrowpoint goes around its left (west) flank and follows a simple crack system (5.2) on the opposite face. The Platform is the spire on the right (December 21, 2003).

The Platform

The Platform from the top of The Arrowpoint or from the west. You're looking at about 40 feet worth of it. The scramble route (5.1R) reaches its top via its southwest face (December 20, 2003).

Smith Summits

The Smith Summits from The Platform to the west. East Summit is on the left (Dec. 2003).

The Arrowpoint

The Arrowpoint from the summit of The Platform. This is looking west from The Platform. The town of Terrebonne, OR lies beyond as do the Oregon Cascades. The Northwest Corner route (5.2, about 50 feet) reaches the top of the Arrowpoint via cracks near the right hand side (December 20, 2003).

Smith Rock

A couple west side crags of Smith Rock. The complex (chossy looking) thing on the left is Kiss Of The Lepers Buttress while Mokey Face (lookee at that shadow!) is on the right (Dec. 2003).
