Bali.
We reached Bali around 9pm that evening. A bit of sightseeing on the first day, a bit of beach time on the second day and then we were sort of Bali-ed out. The southeast portion of the island is incredibly touristy and very crowded. The local flavor is very much drowned out and yet we were stuck with a pre-reserved place that was meant for a now-defunct family reunion. Also, we were not connecting with our hired driver. For example, we asked him to take us for some local eats and instead ended up elbow deep in “world famous ribs” with a bunch of drunken Chinese tourists at a place called Fat Chow’s. After three days we were itching to go home. This time, the trip dragged on with long flight legs and almost equally long layovers.

I’d like to go back to China to taste more of the varied climbing this vast country has to offer – two or three other crags look particularly intriguing and of course more areas are being developed. Shirley’s less psyched – it’s a big world with many more places to check out. Hopefully the pull of our 10 year visas will win out in a few years.
