West Smith Summit

Yours truly atop the West Smith Summit in drizzly weather. This is looking roughly north. The pointy spire in far background (below my posterior) is The Poplar (Oct. 1, 2005).

Weekend of October (1st and 2nd) in 2005. On Saturday, marginal weather made us hike up the easy west slopes of the Smith Rock Group and climbed the short bolt ladder to the summit of the West Smith Summit spire. Nice views – that’s about it. On the hike down, we hit up Phoenix (5.10a) on the Phoenix Buttress. A beautiful sport line in some vibrant red rock! Well deserving of its high-star rating in the book. On Sunday, we did Bill’s Flake (5.10a) and struggled on the Phantasmagoria (5.10c) next door. Both of these are on the Red Wall and the former is a pretty little gem of a crack route. Its only downside is its length (not enough of it as in 30 feet).

Leading Bill's Flake (5.10a) - this is pretty much the end of the difficulties...yeah, short but great rock and nice crack (Oct. 2, 2005).
