HK-style approach.

Nine years after our first China trip, it dawned on us that our 10-year, multiple entry visas were about to expire. And so we decided to head back to the country that has always fascinated me. To that end, we once again got in touch with Ola (our China fixer from 2016) and, after a bit of back and forth, a decision was made to spend our two week trip (minus a couple of days dedicated to “warming up” on Hong Kong granite) in a remote area of the country. In the months leading up to the trip, Ola invested quite a bit of her time and effort procuring climbing permits for the national park where we were intending to go.

Things did not go according to plan. In fact, our 2-week trip lasted about 5 days and we never left Hong Kong. On our second day and second climb in the city, I took a fall and fractured both of my heels. Though Ola offered to climb with Shirley while I waited things out, I could hardly walk across our hotel room and so a cross-China trip did not seem feasible. We threw in the towel and headed home instead.
