Overview

Rooster Rock

Rooster summit.

While cleaning up a hard drive on my work computer, I stumbled on a handful of old photos from a spring 2002 climb of Rooster Rock in the Columbia Gorge. This was during our basic climbing class with the Mazamas. Nothing but warm and fuzzy memories (we did a lot of post outing/post lectures drinking in the Luck Lab pub…) from those days. We’ve taken a couple (actually 1.5 to be exact) classes with the club since that time but somehow never recaptured the fun, easy-going group dynamic we’ve had with those people during the 3 months of the class. We’ve also been up Rooster a handful (5-ish?) more times, including taking some newbies (family and friends). I always seem to enjoy the idea of a quick, post-work, summertime outing to a small (but proud!) pinnacle summit. All the photos shown here were taken by our friend Patrick Wang (rest in peace).

Work it baby, work it!!

Much of our Mazamas Basic Class atop Rooster Rock. In the foreground on the left is Sentil, followed by Ryan, followed by Andrew (with whom we stayed friends till this day). Shirley and I are in the center with somebody rocking that shorts-over-polypro look that was all the rage in the Spring season of 2002. Lowest on the right is Jeff (our mentor in those early days), followed by Bruce (our fearless group leader & instigator), and Anne. Photo was taken by our friend Patrick Wang who died in a climbing accident in 2005 (Spring 2002).
