Summary

Coyote Tower

Shirley topping out on Coyote Tower.

Quick in and out to Sedona for a bit of sunshine and sand. Climbed the Coyote Tower via its 6-pitch 5.10 line. Not much to look at really (hardly a tower, more of a buttress on Courthouse Butte) but it features some surprisingly good climbing. The highlights were the two dihedral pitches, 2 and 5…possibly the funnest climbing we’ve done on Sedona choss to date. And we had the formation all to ourselves as a bonus. Spent the first half of Sunday bushwhacking and getting our asses handed to us on another climb elsewhere…Home Sunday evening.

Coyote Tower

Coyote Tower…or “Tower” – that unremarkable looking buttress at the right edge of Courthouse Butte (Oct. 2013).

Coyote Tower

Leading pitch 1 of Coyote Tower – it goes something like boulder move, walk, boulder move, walk…for 160 feet. Things get much better right above though (Oct. 2013).

Coyote Tower

Shirley almost done with pitch 2 though arguably this is the crux move…right at the tippy top (Oct. 2013).

Coyote Tower

Shirley topping out on pitch 3 of Coyote Tower – this is the limestone band…looks quite choosy but has seen enough traffic to be in fact pretty clean (Oct. 2013).

Coyote Tower

Another great pitch on Coyote Tower – this is #5, 5.9 lieback to a handcrack (Oct. 2013).

Coyote Tower

Leading the sixth and final pitch of Coyote Tower. The wide slot allows a 5.9 passage through the overhanging summit cap rock (Oct. 2013).

Oak Creek Spire (which we’ve climbed some years ago) as seen from somewhere on Coyote Tower (Oct. 2013).

Coyote Tower

Shirley approaching the wide exit on pitch 6…don’t know how but I nearly chipped my front tooth while exiting this here cap rock slot…gotta climb with what you got: hands, knees, tooths…

The joys of the wide top-out on Coyote Tower (Oct. 2013).
