Rio Rest Day

Go back to Brazil.

Rio de Janeiro

Ipanema Beach.

Pouring rain and a thick overcast greeted us on arrival in Rio. We were met at the airport by Duda, our driver and a climber himself, and Didi who, along with his wife, Sue, was our main contact. Both of them were optimistic despite a hopelessly looking dark sky. They assured us that the weather would be fine though we’d start out our trip with a non-climbing “rest day”. In the morning, the two picked us from our hotel in the Ipanema neighborhood and we drove west out of the city to check out the Prainha Beach and to do a short hike in the urban Tijuca Forest. Nice but we were wondering why it was that we weren’t climbing despite a much improved, mostly sunny weather. We would find out the following day.
