Suesca Day 1

Go back to Suesca.

L.P.

L.P.

We arrived at Bogota airport on a Friday evening and were picked up by the prearranged driver (Sebastian’s brother-in-law) for a quick drive northeast to the town of Suesca. Well, it looked quick on Google maps but turned out to be considerably longer: pushing 3 hours with 2 of those being taken up by Bogota traffic.

We were at the base of the crag by about 9:30 the next morning. The whole package is nicely unique. The short approach from the village follows a semi-abandoned railroad track which traverses the entire length of the base of the escarpment. Our first route called L.P. (5.8, 5 pitches) was at the far end and so we got to preview some lines and get stories on their histories from Sebastian as we were hiking in. Though the cliff is covered in invasive Spanish moss (a bizarre looking thing), the routes themselves are clean. Soon we were on the summit where we met Sebastian who came prepared with lunch. For the second course, we climbed the two pitch La Diagonal (5.7 per guidebook though first pitch felt harder). Though Sebastian was encouraging us to do one more nice looking crack climb, I felt pretty out of it with a touch of jetlag and a pinch of altitude effects (Suesca is at about 8500 feet). And so we called it a day and went for beer.
